Rise in violent crime in Malaga

Levels of violent crime have increased in Malaga province since the beginning of the year, compared to 2008. 18 fatalities have been reported in the Malaga region within the past 8 months, four more than the previous year. A 55 year old businessman was shot dead in Ronda yesterday, now the 14th incident this year. Police and the Guardia Civil are still investigating five cases, with no arrests made as yet.

Man wanted by police in Italy, caught in Marbella

A 42 year old Italian man has been arrested in Marbella, wanted by Italian police on drug trafficking charges. He’s been wanted by police in his home country since March 2008, following a raid in which 30 kilos of cocaine was seized, and an unknown quantity of cannabis. He was detained in a hotel in San Pedro yesterday, and been remanded in custody.

Clinical trials for swine flu vaccine getting underway

The department of health has announced clinical trials for the swine flu vaccine, for 400 children between six months and 17 years of age. 35 million euros has been allocated to the trials in Andalucia, a spokesman for the department of health stated yesterday that the region is prepared to cope with the virus, with vaccinations available for up to 60% of the population.

Roca in court again over dismissal from Marbella town hall

As investigations in fraud operation Malaya continue in Marbella, Juan Antonio Roca is set to appear in court again, following his recent dismissal from the town hall. The ex head of town planning was arrested three years ago, and had been suspended from work, but it was recently revealed he has now lost his job. Roca is hoping to receive compensation, if he isn’t re-employed. The case is due in court later this month.

Charity events for Ciudad de los Niños

A charity golf day is taking place this Saturday the 12th of September, in aid of the Ciudad de los Niños in Malaga. The tournament is taking place at Calanova. A summer fair is taking place the following Saturday, on the 19th, behind Café Bar Carlton in El Faro. The Positively Pink breast cancer charity is hosting the 5th annual ball on the 6th of October, at El Oceano Beach Hotel. A 3 course dinner is included, along with a complimentary open bar and fantastic live entertainment. Tickets are 95 euros, with half of the ticket price going to the charity.
